Long associated with classic and traditional design, sash windows often evoke thoughts of grandeur. A well looked after window can do wonders for the overall look of a house and the benefits of having newly refurbished windows are endless due to the savings on your energy bills, the sound proofing benefits and ensuring condensation is at a minimum to name but a few.
Despite this, we all know how expensive having these kinds of repairs can be and although it can often pay off in the long term, the upfront cost can be eye-watering when you are looking at updating a number of windows.
However, windows can have an impact on the value of your house with research suggesting that on period properties, sash timber windows – when sympathetically styled – can increase the value. If your windows have been fitted in the past five years, it looks even better!
It’s often assumed that in the long term, uPVC windows actually provide better value for money – but that isn’t necessarily correct. There’s no denying, the upfront cost of having timber sash windows is often more expensive than uPVC, but if treated well, timber windows could outlast a uPVC window by years.
Timber windows also often come with longer warranties than uPVC windows and when installed by a professional, you can be sure you’re getting good quality frames that are environmentally friendly in most cases.
Our tips on making sure your sash timber windows look good;
1. Only have your window installed by a professional
We preach this advice regularly, but always make sure your window is being fitted by a reputable joiner to avoid problems further down the line. Where possible use recommendations and ask if you can see work they’ve done previously.
2. Repaint every 7 years
Unfortunately timber windows do require more maintenance than uPVC. In order to keep your lovely windows looking good, it’s imperative that you paint every 7 years or so. Perfect if you change your mind about the colour regularly!
