How to fit a sash lock
Intro
Getting accurate measurements of the window and researching what kind of fastener you require are essential to getting this project right. We’ve put together some tips on how to change a sash lock.
Steps
-
Firstly, measure the space between the top edge of the frame and the glass on the upper sash meeting rail.
-
Measure the size of the gap between the sashes.
-
Decide on what style of sash fastener you want. They usually have two parts: a main body and a keep.
-
Determine which part of the fastener fits onto the upper sash and make sure it is less than the measurement for the upper sash meeting rail. Make sure the fastener will span the correct gap between the sashes otherwise the body and the keep will not meet.
-
Measure the width of the sash and decide whether you need one or two fasteners.
-
If using one fastener, position midway along the sash. If using two, position the first a third of the way across and the second a further third of the way across.
-
Place the fastener in the closed position and mark on the screw holes for the main body and keep, making sure the fastener is parallel to the edge of the meeting rail.
-
Drill pilot holes for the brass fixing screws.
-
Fix the main body to the window using a hand screw driver – never use a power tool. Our tip is to rub the screw shaft with wax to help it bite into the wood.
-
Make sure the fastener is in the open position and fix the keep to the window using a hand screw driver.
-
Close the fastener to test that it fastens the sashes together. Make any adjustments necessary at this point.
-
Test the lock on each fastener to make sure they work correctly.
