How to remove sash windows
Intro
Minor repairs to sash windows that can be done yourself could save you money, but most repair work starts with taking out the sashes from the window, which is a task in itself. These steps will help you remove the sash windows safely, enabling you to undertake any repair work needed to your window.
Steps
-
Examine the staff bead to determine whether it has caulk around the outside edge. If so, use a knife to break the seal between the staff bead and the frame.
-
Carefully lever off the staff bead on one of the four sides, making sure not to damage the frame underneath.
-
Repeat for the other three sides.
-
Move the lower sash out of the frame enough so that the cord can be unfixed from the frame of the sash.
-
Tie a knot in the cord to prevent it from falling into the sash box.
-
Repeat on the other side of the window and remove the lower sash from the frame.
-
Examine the parting bead to determine whether it has been caulked to the frame. If so, use a knife to break the seal between the frame and the parting bead.
-
Carefully prise out the parting bead from all around the frame.
-
As you did for the lower sash, move the upper sash out of the frame enough so that the cord can be unfixed from the frame of the sash.
-
Tie a knot in the cord to prevent it from falling into the sash box.
-
Repeat on the other side and remove the upper sash from the frame.
